On the 12th day of Christmas

Hope everyone had a very merry Christmas and got everything you wanted. I know I did. Topping the list of favorites were some of the presents from my girl. Including a special edition Vampire Hunter D art book, a beautiful Fruits Basket art cell of Toru and Rin, some snazzy new threads, and last but not least and you guessed it, some new manga titles. After School Nightmare volume 1 and Soul Rescue volume 1. I liked the premise of After School Nightmare so I braved the post Christmas madness and hit the bookstore to pick up the second volume that had just come out. While I was at it I also picked up Crossroad volume 5 and decided to try out another series Eureka Seven volume 1.

Merry Christmas to all

I love the holidays, especially Christmas. Getting together with family and friends, yummy food galore, and last but not least, manga. The end of the year and into January is usually a hot time for new releases and this year looks to be no exception. How does one keep up with so many releases you might ask? The sad truth is, I don't. Out of the 1100 or so manga I own, almost 200 of them have not been read. Sad but true. So do I stop buying new titles? Nope, I plow right on with reckless abandon happily getting further and further behind. So with that in mind, here are some cool new releases that will make your Christmas even merrier.

Battle Angel Alita Last Order Vol 8 Angel's Vision
This is one of the first manga I ever read. Along with OMG! it was one of the first on my bookshelf and remains one of my favorites. It doesn't come out all that often (only twice a year) so when it does, it is something to celebrate. To call this series "extremely violent" would be putting it mildly. This ones not for kiddies. Travel along with Alita as she fights to discover her past, ripping anyone who gets in her way limb from limb.

Next is the latest installment of Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Volume 3 White Maze. Are there vampires roaming the streets of Niihama? Motoko and section 9 are going to find out. What dark secrets lie in wait.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any weirder, it did. Gacha Gacha is back with the next revolution. Nintendo might have every ones attention with the wii but they've got nothing on a video game system that can turn your average guy into a cute little honey. How will Akira handle being able to change gender at will; or accident if the wind blows the wrong way. Please pass the pepper!

What would you do if a well meaning alien accidentally "kissed" you (ran you over with an intergalactic space ship). but it gets better, as an apology, they reconstruct your body back perfectly to the way it was except for one little tiny detail. They mistook your gender and reconstructed you as a girl. whoops! They say they can't fix it? What?! Then to make matters worse, they broadcast an apology to the entire planet telling what they did and who they did it to. To top it off, you just confessed your feelings to the girl you like but now you're a girl too and the media is hounding you night and day for an interview. what's a boy.... er I mean girl to do. Find out in this cute new gender bending calamity, Kashimashi volume 1.

5th in the stack is Pastel volume 5. Mugi and Yuu's budding relationship continues on down the road, With a few speed bumps along the way. leave it to Mugi, ever the gentleman (most of the time) to persevere.

The last two in the stack I haven't read yet, so you'll have to wait, but not for long. School Rumble volume 4 and The Wallflower volume 10. Pretty boys vs the queen of darkness. It's gonna be good.

That's it for this week. Have a merry Christmas and happy new year. Maybe this next year I'll finally keep my new years resolution of getting caught up. One can wish.

Hooray for Holic

When I got home today after a long day, 14 hours to be precise, I was greeted by the sight of some presents left by "Santa". Three shiny new manga (well two were mate finish, details details :-) on my desk. Thanks Santa!

Much to my delight, xxxHOLiC vol 8 topped the stack. Clamp has always been one of my favorite artist teams. I'm still trying to track down original copies of Clover. Other than Clover, Clamp School Detectives, and Man of Many Faces, I think I Have all their works. In this latest installment Kimihiro continues to work off his debt to Yuko. She tops the list right above Haruka from Love Hina as one of the worst slave drivers of all time. One of the highlights of this series are the beautiful and ever changing outfits that Yuko has a seemingly endless supply of. Clamp really goes all out on costume design and it shows.

After I regained my composure and gave my sweetheart a big kiss of thanks, I flipped through the stack to find Yubisaki Milk Tea vol 3. A cute little love triangle story full of all the angst of youth. (begin rant)I'm not sure the series deserves the 18+ rating and that very very annoying parental advisory right over the front of the cover. For goodness sake, put it on a sticker so it can be removed after sale. Ya might as well have Laughing Man logos right over their faces. It really takes away from the cover. (end rant:-)

And last but certainly not least was the 3rd volume of TenshiJa Nai!! "I'm No Angel! Hikaru has had to put up with a lot after meeting Izumi. At first she despised her role in trying to keep up the elaborate farce created by Izumi. But as she came to learn the reasons behind Izumi's actions, Hikaru has started helping out of her own free will. Will Izumi pay off her... sorry HIS debt or will his freaky fan boys find him out. Not if Hikaru and Yasukuni have anything to do with it.

Tuesday's reading list

I just picked up a few new titles yesterday from Waldenbooks.
These are alpha by title for no good reason.

If you're wondering about all the books before this, see " The Library" under Links. There is NO WAY I'm going back and writing a blog for all of them, at least not right away. I'm busy enough reading the new one. I will probably write a collective review for the series that are finished (the ones in blue). If you have question or comment on a particular series feel free to post.

Topping the list is: Aoi House vol 2. Cute series so far, especially Boo the hamster. I almost pity Alex and Sandy with what they have to put up with... well almost ;-)

Next up is: Because I'm the Goddess vol 2. Take one beautiful Goddess with the power to level continents and give her the curiosity (and IQ) of a cat. Pretty basic and repetitive plot so far with capturing the Gifts. Though it does look like there might be some interesting twists coming up. we will have to wait and see.

Next is one of my favorite series, Boobiepop. In this latest release: Boogiepop Dual vol 1 Loser's' Circus, our favorite phantasm is possessing a boy for once. Unfortunately for the protagonist, Boogiepop treats his host body with little care in the fight to bring balance. If not for the school nurse who keeps boogiepop in check, the first fatality of the book would not come by the hands of the forces of darkness.

Take one cute vampire with an excess, that right "Excess" of blood and a predisposition for people who are having a bad day and you get the 3rd volume of: Chibi Vampire (aka Karin). Not sure why the manga and the anime go by two different names but oh well. In this volume we continue to follow the exploits of Karin as she tries to find who she is as a vamp.

This next one IS my favorite series. Fruits Basket by Natsuki Takaya. This series really touched me when I first saw it. I got teary eyed when I watched the anime, it was beautiful. I hope they make a second season (hint hint nudge nudge Miss Takaya), pretty please with sprinkles on top? Ahem.. where was I? Oh yeah! Volume 15. More details come to light about Toru, Yuki, and Kyo's past, No spoilers I promise. suffice to say that it was the most hilarious adaptation of Cinderella ever, Hana was great.

Moving right along, we have Fullmetal Alchemist vol 10. A tale of two brothers on a quest to get their bodies back. This series has plenty of action, a solid and diverse cast, and plenty of plot twist and surprises to keep you entertained. I haven't had a chance to read vol ten yet but I'm looking forward to it.

From the world wide web comes the next one in my stack. Inverloch by Sarah Ellerton, a beautifully done full color work that finally came to print. In this story Acheron continues his journey to find the childhood friend of an elf he befriended. This curious and trusting little fellow who for all his life has lived in seclusion is in for the adventure of his life which might not be long if he isn't careful. He picks up along the way an unlikely band of travelers including a thief catcher, a thief, and a young apprentice Mage. I've been reading this one since she posted the first page online, but I bought the books because I wanted a physical copy. This also helps support the artist. You ca read the entire story from the beginning at www.seraph-inn.com. Keep up the good work Sarah.

From the mind of a true master of pantie shots, Ken Akamatsu comes the 12th volume of Negina!. This is the story of well... Negina! A ten year old British wizard fresh out of the halls of higher learning. Task with the job of being the teacher of two dozen very rowdy girls at an all girls middle school; Trying to find out what became of his father; studying and improving his magic without blowing the uniforms off his students 8-) Oh yeah don't forget not getting killed in the process by a vengeful vampire or your own students when you vaporize their panties in front of the person they're crushing on.

This next one is a new twist on an old favorite. Neon Genesis Evangelion Angelic Days volume 3. Dang! That's a mouthful. In this version which is a little more light hearted than its predecessor, we follow the everyday exploits the the three pilots as they confront the enormity of the task of saving the world.

A spin off from R.O.D. "Read or Die", R.O.D. "Read or Dream" vol 1 Details the misadventures of three sisters who have the power to control paper just like their predecessor, The Paper. Does that make any sense? Anyway, they can make paper into anything. they can make paper into paper airplanes, they can make paper into paper walls, they can make paper into giant paper robots? they can make paper into paper arrows to impale poor innocent pigeons when the can't make paper into a turkey dinner. they can make paper into...... Oh you get the idea.

Every ones favorite little fledgling witch is back in this cute little love story "Someday's Dreamers Spellbound". Love is in the air but there's going to be a few bumps along the way when magic is involved. "I really like you, sorry for turning your motorcycle into a tree." or something like that. Anyway, it's sweet with a few sad moments. A must read for fans of the series.

From the dusty wastelands comes the next book in the stack: Trigun Maximum vol 10. This series can be summed up in three words: dust, bullets, and blood. Nightow delves into the darker side of the human Psyche in this tale of a future wild west where humanity teaders on the brink of extinction. Advanced ailing technology left over from their emigration from space that no one understands is the only thing holding civilization together. Thanks to Vash's whimsical personality the story goes back and forth from slap stick silly to dead serious. In this volume, Wolfwood confronts his dark past. Will he come out whole or full of holes? You'll have to read it to find out.

The phrase "The girl is nothing but trouble" comes to mind when it comes to Tsukuyomi Moon Phase. In this 5th volume, Hazuki continues her mistreatment of Kouhei as if it were an Olympic sport. With most of her past still shrouded in mystery, we still know little about why she is being sought by the higher vampires. Only time will tell, and in the world of the undead, time is one thing they have plenty of.

Merlin's Library

Hello to all those who read this, my name is Merlin. I'm what you would call an avid reader. It's an adiction that's up to on average two books a day. I read science fiction, fantasy, Historical Fiction, and a very unhealthy dose of Manga and Manwa (Japanese and Korean comics). This blog is dedicated to the latter of these.
